Want to know which campaign actually sent your visitors?

Without tags, a click from your newsletter or a partner's post often lands in analytics as generic referral or direct traffic. UTM parameters fix that by carrying the campaign details in the link itself. This page appends them for you, encodes anything that could break the address, and shows the finished link instantly. No data leaves your browser.

Step by step

  1. Put the destination address in the first field. The output stays blank until it has a value.
  2. Set the source to the site, platform or list that will carry the link, for example facebook or spring-newsletter.
  3. Set the medium to the kind of traffic, such as email, cpc or social, and give the campaign a short name like spring_sale.
  4. Use the term field for the paid keyword and the content field to separate variants, such as a header link and a footer link in one email. Both are optional.
  5. Take the link from the output box using "Copy URL", then test it once in a browser to be sure the page loads.

What to watch for

The form checks nothing. It will happily build a link with no source or medium, and it does not confirm that the address you typed is a real URL. Capital letters pass through unchanged, so decide on a naming convention before the campaign starts and write it down for everyone who builds links. Any text you enter is percent-encoded: a space turns into %20 and a plus sign into %2B, which is correct but means "running+shoes" shows as a literal plus in your reports. When the address already contains a question mark, the tags are joined with an ampersand, which is what you want. An address with a # anchor is handled as well: the tags go in ahead of the anchor, which stays last. After a campaign ends, links you placed on other sites keep their tags, so the old campaign name can keep appearing in reports.

Questions people ask

Which UTM fields are required?

Technically none; the builder only needs the destination. In practice, always set source, medium and campaign, because reports group traffic by them.

Can I use UTM links for internal navigation?

Avoid it. A tagged internal link tells analytics the visit came from your campaign and overwrites the original source, which distorts attribution.

Will UTM parameters create duplicate pages in search?

They can if tagged links get crawled. A canonical tag on the page that points to the clean URL tells search engines which version you prefer.
