Setting up the head tags for a new page and want them right the first time?

Every page needs a handful of lines in its <head>: a character set, a viewport for mobile, a title, a description, and usually a canonical link. Writing them by hand invites small errors, like an unescaped quote that ends an attribute early. Fill in this form and it produces the whole set as clean, escaped HTML you can copy. The page does the work locally, with no data sent to a server.

Step by step

  1. Write the title you want shown in search results and browser tabs, then the description you would like as the snippet.
  2. Fill keywords and author only if your workflow uses them; empty fields are left out of the output.
  3. Paste the preferred address of the page into the canonical field. A complete URL with the protocol is the safe choice.
  4. Set the robots dropdown: the first option for pages you want in search, or one of the two noindex choices for pages you want kept out.
  5. Choose one of the seven languages in the dropdown (English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese). This becomes a comment, not a tag.
  6. Press "Generate All Meta Tags", review the code block, and press "Copy".

What to watch for

Some lines are fixed. The charset is always UTF-8 and the viewport is always width=device-width with an initial scale of 1.0. The robots value comes from the dropdown, which offers just three combinations. Blank title and description boxes are left out entirely, so an empty field means no tag at all, not an empty one. Before pasting, compare the output with what your theme or SEO plugin already prints: two titles, two descriptions or two robots tags on one page are a common audit finding. If a stricter robots tag exists elsewhere on the page, it wins, because Google applies the most restrictive rule. There is no character counter and no check that the canonical is a real, reachable URL.

Questions people ask

How long should my title and description be?

There is no official character limit. Search results truncate long text to fit the display width, so lead with the important words and read the result on a phone as well as a desktop.

Should I fill in the keywords field?

It does no harm, but Google announced long ago that it ignores the meta keywords tag. Treat the field as optional housekeeping.

Why is language a comment instead of a tag?

The recommended place to declare a page's language is the lang attribute on the <html> element, the root of the document rather than a tag inside the head. The comment reminds you to set it there.
