Meta Description Length Too Short

Quick Reference

  • Element Code: ON-015
  • Issue: Meta description is very short (under ~70 characters)
  • Impact: Wasted SERP space; weaker, less compelling snippet
  • Fix: Expand to ~120–155 characters with a clear value proposition + CTA
  • Detection: Screaming Frog, Sitebulb, Ahrefs

What this issue means

Meta descriptions don't influence rankings directly, but they're your ad copy in the search results. Google typically displays up to ~155–160 characters on desktop. A description under ~70 characters leaves most of that space empty and usually under-sells the page.

Why it matters

A fuller, benefit-led description improves click-through rate — and CTR is a meaningful differentiator once you're ranking on page one. An overly short description also makes Google more likely to ignore it and pull a less relevant snippet from the body instead.

How to fix it

  1. Expand to ~120–155 characters. Use the space to state the benefit, not just the topic.
  2. Lead with value, then support it ("X without Y. Here's the step-by-step…").
  3. Include the primary keyword naturally — Google bolds matching query terms.
  4. Add a soft call to action ("Learn how…", "See the data…").
  5. Keep it unique per page.

Common mistakes

  • Padding with filler to hit a length instead of adding real value.
  • Duplicating the title verbatim.
  • Keyword-stuffing, which reads as spam and gets rewritten.

Tools to detect it

Screaming Frog, Sitebulb, Ahrefs and Semrush all report short/missing descriptions in bulk with character counts.

FAQ

Is a short meta description a ranking problem?

No — descriptions aren't a ranking factor. The cost is lower CTR and a weaker snippet.

Should every page have a custom description?

For important pages, yes. For large archives, a good template or letting Google auto-generate is acceptable.

TL;DR: Expand short descriptions to ~120–155 characters, lead with the benefit, include the keyword, and keep each one unique.
