A technical SEO audit is a systematic review of how well a website can be crawled, rendered, indexed, and served to users and search engines.
Unlike a content or backlink review, a technical audit focuses on the infrastructure that determines whether good content ever gets a fair chance to rank. It checks the foundations: whether search engines can reach pages, understand them, and choose the right canonical version to show in results.
A thorough audit usually covers crawlability (robots.txt rules, internal linking, orphan pages, crawl budget), indexation (noindex tags, canonical signals, index bloat, duplicate content), and rendering (JavaScript dependencies and whether content appears in the rendered HTML). It also reviews site architecture and URL structure, HTTP status codes and redirect chains, XML sitemaps, structured data, and Core Web Vitals performance. HTTPS, mobile-first readiness, and hreflang for multilingual sites round out the common scope.
Typical tools and outputs
Auditors combine a crawler (such as Screaming Frog or Sitebulb) with Google Search Console's Pages, Sitemaps, and URL Inspection reports, plus log file analysis when crawl behavior is in question. The output is a prioritized list: issues ranked by impact and effort, so the highest-leverage fixes (a site-wide noindex, a broken canonical pattern, a blocked resource) get addressed before cosmetic ones.
The goal is not a perfect score but the removal of barriers between your content and the index. An audit is a snapshot, so most sites benefit from repeating it on a schedule and after any major migration or redesign.
