Understanding E-E-A-T
E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) is the framework Google's quality raters use to evaluate content quality. While not a direct ranking factor, E-E-A-T signals influence how algorithms assess content, particularly for YMYL (Your Money Your Life) topics covering health, finance, safety, and major life decisions. The addition of "Experience" in 2022 emphasized first-hand knowledge, recognizing that practical experience provides value beyond formal expertise.
The Four E-E-A-T Components
Experience refers to first-hand involvement with a topic. A product reviewer who actually used the product demonstrates experience; someone aggregating other reviews does not. Expertise means having the knowledge and skill expected for the topic. Medical content requires medical expertise; hobbyist topics require hobby expertise. Authoritativeness reflects reputation as a go-to source for a topic, built through citations, mentions, and recognition. Trustworthiness encompasses accuracy, transparency, legitimacy, and honesty of both content and website.
| Component | Signals | Optimization Actions |
|---|---|---|
| Experience | First-hand knowledge, personal stories, original photos | Include personal experience, show actual product use, share real results |
| Expertise | Credentials, qualifications, demonstrated knowledge | Detailed author bios, credential display, expert contributions |
| Authoritativeness | Citations, mentions, industry recognition, backlinks | Build reputation, earn mentions, develop thought leadership |
| Trustworthiness | Accuracy, transparency, security, honest practices | Source citations, clear policies, HTTPS, contact information |
Author and Publisher Signals
Develop comprehensive author pages with biographies, credentials, expertise areas, and links to published work. Link content to author pages using schema markup (Person schema with author property). For multi-author sites, establish clear editorial standards and review processes. Display publisher information prominently, including About page, contact details, and editorial policies. For YMYL content, ensure authors have relevant qualifications visible on the site. Consider expert review processes where content is reviewed by qualified professionals.
Content-Level E-E-A-T Signals
Demonstrate expertise through comprehensive coverage, accurate information, and proper sourcing. Cite authoritative sources and link to supporting evidence. Update content regularly to maintain accuracy. Include original research, data, images, and insights that only someone with genuine expertise could provide. Show experience through personal anecdotes, case studies, and practical examples. Avoid thin content that aggregates information available elsewhere without adding value. Disclose any conflicts of interest, sponsorships, or affiliate relationships transparently.
Site-Wide Trust Signals
Implement comprehensive privacy policies, terms of service, and disclosure statements. Provide clear contact information including physical address for businesses. Ensure HTTPS throughout the site with proper security certificates. Display professional credentials, certifications, and industry associations. Manage online reputation through review monitoring and response. For e-commerce, show clear return policies, shipping information, and secure payment options. Build and maintain presence on authoritative platforms in your industry. Address negative information transparently rather than hiding it.
