Internal URL Not Found 4XX

Quick Reference

Element Code: LI-004

Issue: Internal links point to pages returning 404 or other 4XX errors

Impact: Poor user experience, wasted crawl budget, lost link equity

Fix: Fix broken links by updating URLs or implementing redirects

Detection: Screaming Frog, Sitebulb, Google Search Console

What Is This Issue?

Internal broken links point to pages on your own site that don't exist (404) or are inaccessible (other 4XX errors). These dead ends frustrate users and waste search engine crawl budget.

Why This Matters

  • User Experience: Users hit dead ends
  • Crawl Budget: Search engines waste resources on dead links
  • Link Equity: PageRank flows to nowhere
  • Quality Signals: Many broken links indicate poor maintenance

How to Fix This Issue

  1. Identify Broken Links: Crawl site to find all 4XX links
  2. Find Link Source: Where is each broken link placed?
  3. Choose Fix Method:
    • Update link to correct URL
    • Implement 301 redirect from old to new URL
    • Remove link if content no longer exists
  4. Monitor Regularly: Check for new broken links periodically

TL;DR (The Simple Version)

You have links pointing to pages that don't exist (404 errors). Either update the links to point somewhere valid, set up redirects to the new locations, or remove the links entirely.
