Technical Definition

PageRank is Google's foundational algorithm measuring page importance based on links. Named after Larry Page. Concept: links pass 'votes' of importance; more links from important pages = higher PageRank. While the original formula has evolved, link-based authority remains central to rankings. Google no longer publicly reports PageRank scores.

Simple Explanation (ELI13)

PageRank is Google's original system for measuring how important a page is based on links. If many important pages link to you, you're probably important too. Google doesn't share PageRank scores anymore, but the idea that links equal votes of trust is still central to how Google works.
