Google shows your meta description only when it judges it the best answer for the query, and it rewrites the snippet from on page text the rest of the time. This case study tests whether you can push Google toward your intended description by hiding the competing on page text from the snippet with the data-nosnippet attribute.

Why Google ignores meta descriptions in the first place

A meta description is a suggestion, not an instruction. Google generates the snippet dynamically, and for many queries it decides that a passage from the body copy answers the searcher better than your authored description, so it quotes the page instead. That is often correct behaviour, because a query specific snippet can outperform a generic description. The problem appears when Google keeps quoting a weak or off message passage, for instance boilerplate near the top of the template, and your carefully written value proposition never shows.

The lever this test explores is subtractive. Rather than writing a better description and hoping, you reduce the supply of alternative text Google can quote. The data-nosnippet attribute marks a span, div, or section as ineligible for use in the snippet. If the passages Google was pulling are wrapped in data-nosnippet, the description becomes a more likely candidate by elimination.

How to run the test cleanly

Identify the pages where Google is ignoring the description and quoting the same on page block. Wrap only that competing block in data-nosnippet on the variant bucket, leave the control untouched, and let both ride the same date range. Measure click through rate on the changed pages against the control forecast, because the goal is a better snippet, and a better snippet should earn more clicks at the same position.

Two guardrails matter. First, data-nosnippet removes that text from every snippet, including featured snippets, so do not wrap content you might want to win a featured snippet with. Second, this is a click through rate play, not a ranking play. If click through rate does not move, the snippet you forced was not more compelling than the one Google chose, and the honest conclusion is to improve the description rather than to keep fighting Google for control of it.

data-nosnippet is one of a family of snippet controls. The max-snippet robots directive caps the length of any text snippet, data-nosnippet excludes specific inline content, and the nosnippet directive removes the text snippet entirely. Used together they let you shape what Google can show without deindexing the page. None of them force a specific description to appear, they only constrain the alternatives, which is the whole mechanism behind this test.

The durable practitioner lesson is that snippet control is about managing candidates, not issuing commands. You cannot make Google show a description, but you can remove the passages it prefers so your description becomes the best remaining option, and then you verify on the live SERP that the intended text is the one being shown.

What has changed since this test

Google introduced the data-nosnippet attribute and the max-snippet and nosnippet robots directives in 2019, and they remain supported. The behaviour has been stable, which is why this technique is still usable years after the original test.

AI Overviews and other generative surfaces now assemble answers from page content, and data-nosnippet also signals that a passage should not be used in those generated snippets. The attribute has therefore taken on a second job beyond the classic blue link snippet, so wrapping content has broader consequences than it did when the test was first run.

Can you force Google to use your meta description?
