Word Count

Word count

Word count is the number of words on a page. It is often discussed as if longer content ranks better, but word count is not a Google ranking factor. There is no minimum length that guarantees rankings and no magic number a page has to reach.

The confusion comes from a real correlation. Comprehensive content that fully answers a query often happens to be longer, and comprehensive content tends to rank well. The length is a byproduct of thoroughness, not the cause of the ranking. Padding a thin page up to a higher word count adds words without adding value, and search engines are well equipped to tell the difference between depth and filler.

What actually matters is whether the page satisfies the search intent completely. Some queries need a short, direct answer; stretching such a page only buries the answer the searcher came for and hurts the experience. Other queries call for genuine depth, where a longer treatment serves the user because the subject demands it. The right length is whatever it takes to answer the question well, no more and no less, and that figure changes from one query to the next.

Comparing word counts against the pages currently ranking can hint at the depth a topic seems to expect, which makes it a useful sanity check. But it is a rough guide, never a target to write toward. Aim to cover the subject thoroughly, then cut anything that does not earn its place on the page. Depth and usefulness, not length, are what readers value and what search engines ultimately reward.
