What content silos actually are

A content silo is a group of tightly related pages linked heavily to each other and organized under a shared URL path, so search engines read the whole cluster as one authoritative block on a topic. Get it right and a well-siloed section can rank for hundreds of long-tail queries off the strength of one strong hub; get it wrong and you fence off pages that should have been sharing link equity with the rest of your site.

Silos overlap with topic clusters, but the emphasis is different. A cluster is a hub-and-spoke shape held together by links. A silo adds a second constraint: strict separation. Pages inside a silo link generously to their siblings and their hub, and only sparingly (or not at all, in the strictest reading) across silo boundaries. That separation is the whole point and also the whole risk.

A real example

Say you run a gardening site with three areas: /vegetables/, /herbs/, and /soil/. A tomato-growing guide lives at /vegetables/growing-tomatoes/ and links down to /vegetables/tomato-varieties/, /vegetables/tomato-pests/, and back up to the /vegetables/ hub. Every page in that silo passes context to the others: crawlers see a dense web of tomato-and-vegetable signals and start trusting the section for those terms.

The tension shows up the moment your tomato-pests page wants to reference a composting article over in /soil/. That link is genuinely useful to a reader, and it's a strong topical connection. A dogmatic silo says "don't cross the boundary." A sane one says "link it, because burying a relevant, helpful connection to protect a diagram of your site map is a bad trade." The strict-silo purists lose real users chasing a theory of PageRank flow that Google has never confirmed works the way they think.

Most sites that "do silos" successfully are really running disciplined internal linking with a clear URL hierarchy, not an airtight quarantine. Keep the structure; drop the dogma about never linking out of a section.

How to build a silo without hurting yourself

  1. Map your topics first. List the 4–8 subjects your site should own, and confirm each has enough real content ideas to justify a hub plus several supporting pages.
  2. Set a URL structure that mirrors the topic tree: /topic/subtopic/. Decide it once and stick to it, because migrating URLs later is expensive.
  3. Build one strong hub page per silo that introduces the topic and links to every supporting page.
  4. Link supporting pages to each other and back to the hub with descriptive anchor text — "tomato pest control," not "click here."
  5. Allow cross-silo links when a connection is genuinely useful to the reader. Track them so you know where your boundaries are porous, but don't strip them out on principle.
  6. Crawl the site (Screaming Frog, Sitebulb, or similar) and check that no supporting page sits more than 2–3 clicks from the hub, and that nothing important is orphaned.
  7. Watch performance per silo in Search Console. If a section stalls while its neighbors climb, your internal linking or content depth is the usual culprit — not a missing wall.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

  • Treating "no cross-links" as gospel. Google has never confirmed strict siloing outperforms a sensible link graph. Fix: link across silos when it helps the reader; only keep boundaries where topics truly don't relate.
  • Thin hubs. A hub that's just a link list gives crawlers nothing to chew on. Fix: write a substantial overview that could rank on its own, then link out from it.
  • Silos with two pages in them. A "silo" of a hub plus one child isn't a silo, it's a pair. Fix: either grow it to real depth or fold it into a larger, related silo.
  • URL structure that fights the silo. Flat URLs (/growing-tomatoes/) undercut the topical grouping you're trying to signal. Fix: nest URLs under their topic path before the section gets big.
  • Set-and-forget. New pages get published without being wired into their silo, so they float. Fix: make "link from the hub and two siblings" part of your publish checklist.
