Ahrefs conducted a large-scale study examining how long it takes newly published pages to reach the first page of Google. The research analyzed millions of pages to establish realistic timeline expectations for ranking, providing data-driven guidance for content strategy planning and stakeholder expectation management.
The Age Factor
The study found that the average page ranking in the top 10 was over 2 years old. Only 5.7% of pages ranked in the top 10 within one year of publication. For highly competitive keywords (50,000+ monthly searches), the percentage of young pages ranking was even lower. This data challenges expectations of quick ranking wins from new content.
Pages reaching the first page within a year were typically from high-authority domains with strong existing link profiles. Domain Rating showed significant correlation with ranking speed. Pages from DR 80+ domains reached the top 10 faster than pages from newer or lower-authority domains, suggesting that domain authority provides meaningful advantage in ranking velocity.
Keyword Difficulty Impact
Low-difficulty keywords showed faster ranking timelines than high-difficulty terms. For keywords with difficulty scores under 20, a larger percentage of pages ranked within 6-12 months. As keyword difficulty increased, the percentage of pages ranking quickly decreased substantially. Targeting appropriate difficulty levels based on domain authority is essential for realistic timeline planning.
The 1-Year Ranking Rate
Among pages that did rank in the top 10 within one year, most achieved rankings between 61-182 days after publication. Very few pages ranked immediately after publication, and those that did typically targeted low-competition queries or benefited from existing internal links and domain authority. The typical pattern showed gradual ranking improvement over months rather than sudden jumps.
Implications for SEO Strategy
This data emphasizes the importance of patience in content SEO. Set realistic expectations with stakeholders: meaningful rankings typically require 6-12+ months even for well-optimized content. Build strategies around appropriate keyword difficulty for your domain's authority level. Focus early efforts on lower-competition terms while building authority for more competitive targets over time.
