Link Reclamation

Link Reclamation is the practice of recovering link value that a site has lost or never fully captured. It covers fixing broken backlinks, restoring links lost during site changes, and converting unlinked brand mentions into proper links. Because the relationship or the link already exists in some form, reclamation is usually faster and higher-converting than cold outreach.

Several common situations create reclaimable value. A page you migrated or deleted may still attract inbound links that now resolve to a 404, wasting the authority those links carry. A redesign or URL change can break internal and external links pointing to old paths. A publisher might update an article and accidentally drop the link to your source. Each of these represents value you already earned and can get back.

The workflow starts with detection. Crawl tools and backlink reports surface links pointing to broken or redirected URLs, while monitoring services flag lost links over time. For 404s with inbound links, a 301 redirect to the most relevant live page often recovers the value with no outreach at all. For links that were edited out or pointed at the wrong page, a short, specific email to the publisher usually resolves it.

Reclamation deserves a regular slot in any link-building program. It protects equity you have already built, requires less effort than earning new links, and tends to involve sites that already know and trust you. Pairing it with unlinked-mention recovery extends the same low-friction approach to brand citations that never linked in the first place.
