How Often Should You Refresh Content? (Data Study)

Siege Media conducted a data-driven study examining the relationship between content refresh frequency and organic traffic performance. The research provides guidance on optimal update intervals and which content types benefit most from regular refreshes.

The Refresh Effect

The study found that updating existing content often produces traffic gains more efficiently than creating new content. Pages that received substantive updates saw average traffic increases within 2-4 weeks of republishing. The research suggests that content refresh should be a core component of content strategy, not an afterthought.

Optimal Refresh Intervals

Data-dependent content like statistics roundups and industry reports benefited from quarterly or semi-annual updates. Evergreen how-to content maintained performance with annual reviews. Time-sensitive content required more frequent attention to remain relevant. The key finding was that optimal frequency depends heavily on content type and how quickly the underlying information changes.

What Constitutes a Meaningful Update

Minor edits like fixing typos or updating a single statistic showed minimal impact. Meaningful refreshes involved adding new sections, updating multiple data points, improving comprehensiveness, or restructuring for clarity. Google appears to distinguish between cosmetic updates and substantive improvements that genuinely enhance user value.

Prioritizing Refresh Candidates

The research suggested prioritizing content that ranks on page 2 or positions 5-10, where improvements might push it into higher-traffic positions. Content showing declining traffic trends also represents good refresh candidates. High-performing content that's already ranking well may not need frequent updates unless information becomes outdated.
