AI Summary
Forum content, Reddit above all, moved from the margins of search results to the top of them because a user behaviour change, a deliberate Google ranking direction and a commercial licensing agreement all landed within roughly two years of each other. For marketers the practical consequence is that a significant share of the results page for your category is now written by people you cannot edit.
- Searchers began appending a forum name to queries specifically to bypass content written primarily to rank.
- Google publicly pursued surfacing first hand experience and added a discussions and forums results block.
- Google and Reddit announced a content partnership in February 2024.
- Access is asymmetric: Googlebot is licensed in while most other crawlers, including ours, are blocked at the network edge.

The rise of forum content in search is usually explained as an algorithm update. It is better understood as a demand signal that Google chose to serve. People started manually adding a forum name to their queries, which is about as unambiguous a piece of user feedback as a search engine will ever receive: the default results were not trusted. Everything that followed, including the ranking direction and the licensing agreement, is a response to that. You cannot out optimise this, and you should not try to game it. What you can do is read the threads as the highest quality customer research available to you, and fix the reason people preferred a stranger's opinion to your page.
There is a specific moment most SEO teams noticed this. A commercial query they had ranked for reliably started returning a discussion thread above their page, and the thread was three years old, badly formatted, and more useful than anything on their site. That experience has been repeated across nearly every consumer facing category, and understanding why it happened matters more than reacting to it.
Key findings
The visibility shift was not a single event. Four developments compounded, and separating them is what makes the situation actionable rather than merely frustrating.
| Development | What it was | Why it mattered | Can you influence it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| The query modifier habit | Users appending a forum name to searches to reach real opinions | A direct, measurable signal that default results were not satisfying an intent | Indirectly, by being the result people did not want to bypass |
| Surfacing first hand experience | Google's stated direction of raising personal and forum content, including its Hidden Gems work | Turned a user workaround into a default behaviour of the results page | Yes, by publishing genuine experience rather than aggregated summaries |
| The discussions and forums block | A distinct SERP feature reserving space for threaded discussion | Guaranteed forum real estate on qualifying queries independent of the blue links | No, but you can compete for the organic positions around it |
| The content partnership | Google and Reddit announced a licensing agreement in February 2024 | Formalised access for one search engine on terms unavailable to others | No |
Distinguishing user behaviour from product decisions from commercial agreements clarifies which parts you can act on.
The access asymmetry nobody plans for
Here is a detail that changes how you should approach research in this area. While preparing this piece, we attempted a routine fetch of the platform's robots.txt from an ordinary machine on 20 July 2026. The request was refused with a network policy block before any file was served.
That is worth sitting with. A site whose content is among the most visible in Google will not serve a plain text file to an unidentified client. The visibility and the openness have been decoupled: one search engine has negotiated access, and the general web has not. Practically, this means your usual toolkit does not work here. Crawlers stall, scrapers get blocked, and third party tools that appear to have data are either using the official API or working from cached history.
If you need data at any scale, use the official API and stay inside the terms of service. If you need occasional qualitative reading, use a site restricted search in Google, which surfaces indexed threads without touching the platform directly.
Methodology and data
Be sceptical of precise numbers in this area, including any you see quoted confidently. Third party traffic estimates for a domain of this size carry wide error bars, the SERP feature's trigger rate varies by query class and country, and the underlying agreements are commercial arrangements whose terms are not public. This article deliberately cites only publicly announced developments and one observation we made ourselves and can reproduce.
If you want a measurement of what this means for your own market, do not look for an industry average. Take your top one hundred commercial queries, record what occupies the first screen for each, and classify the results by type: your pages, competitor pages, retailer pages, forum threads, and SERP features. Repeat quarterly. That gives you a number that is actually about your business, and it will tell you whether forum encroachment is a real problem in your category or a headline you read.
Practical applications
The productive response has three parts, and none of them involve trying to rank a forum thread.
First, mine the threads as research. A discussion thread is unmoderated voice of customer data: the actual phrasing people use, the objections they raise, the competitor comparisons they make unprompted, and the questions your marketing never anticipated. This is more honest than a survey because nobody was performing for a researcher. Extract the recurring questions and use them to structure your own pages, which is also how you become eligible for featured snippets on those questions.
Second, work out what your pages were missing. When a thread beats your page, the diagnosis is almost always the same: your page describes the product and the thread describes the experience of using it. Specific numbers, failure modes, what it is bad at, what happened after six months. Marketing pages systematically omit exactly the information that makes a page trustworthy. Adding it is not a ranking trick, it is the fix.
Third, participate honestly or not at all. If you have genuine standing in a discussion, answer under an identified account, disclose the affiliation, and be useful without steering. The failure mode is well known to every moderator and it gets your domain banned outright. If you host community content of your own, our guide to user generated content strategy and moderation covers building the same asset on property you control.
Tracking the results page, not just your rank
Rank tracking that reports a single position number is now actively misleading. Position three above a large discussions block, an AI summary and a video carousel is a very different outcome from position three in a plain list of links. Move your reporting to composition tracking: for each priority query, record which features appear and how much of the first screen your result actually occupies.
The most useful derived metric is the share of your priority queries where a forum thread appears above your best result. That number, tracked over time, tells you whether the problem is growing, and it identifies exactly which pages to rewrite first. Our reference on SERP features covers the full set to watch for, and building your brand as a recognisable entity, discussed in our entity SEO guide, is the longer term defence for branded queries.
Limitations and context
Findings here indicate patterns rather than definitive causation, and the situation is unusually unstable. Prominence of forum results has been visibly adjusted more than once, varies substantially by country and language, and depends on commercial agreements that could be renegotiated. Anything you build specifically to exploit the current arrangement is building on a foundation you do not own.
The durable read is about the demand rather than the mechanism. People went out of their way to find answers from someone with real experience. That preference predates the current results page and will outlast it. The strategic response is to become a source with genuine experience worth citing, which is the one position that survives whatever the results page looks like next year.
FAQ
Three forces reinforced each other. Searchers began appending a forum name to queries to reach genuine opinions, Google publicly leaned into surfacing first hand experience through its Hidden Gems work and a dedicated discussions and forums block, and Google and Reddit announced a content partnership in February 2024. Add an extremely strong domain and vast query coverage and the result is what you see.
Not as a link building tactic. Links in most large subreddits are nofollowed, promotional posts from new accounts are removed quickly, and moderators ban domains that get spammed. The value is not the link. It is being present and useful in a thread that already ranks for a query you care about, which is a visibility and reputation play rather than an authority one.
No. The content belongs to the users who wrote it and the platform's terms govern reuse, so republishing threads exposes you to both a copyright problem and a duplicate content problem. You can legitimately read threads to understand what people ask and what language they use, then write your own original answer.
Use a site restricted search in Google for your brand name, which surfaces indexed threads, and set up alerting on that query. For structured monitoring, use the platform's official API rather than scraping, because the site actively blocks unapproved crawlers at the network edge.
Possibly. The prominence of any single SERP feature is a product decision and it has been adjusted before. The underlying demand it serves, which is people wanting an answer from someone with real experience rather than a page built to rank, is far more durable than the feature that currently serves it. Build for the demand, not for the feature.
Do not try to remove it, and do not brigade it. Engage in the thread honestly under an identified account if you have something useful to add, address the underlying complaint if it is legitimate, and strengthen the pages you do control so the surrounding results serve your side of the story. Suppression attempts usually generate a second thread about the suppression attempt.
