Pagination SEO Study: How to Handle Multi-Page Content

Research into pagination SEO examined best practices for handling multi-page content following Google's deprecation of rel=prev/next signals. The study analyzed crawling patterns and ranking outcomes for different pagination approaches.

View All Page Strategy

"View all" pages that consolidated content showed strong SEO performance where page load remained acceptable. Google expressed preference for single-page content when possible. For shorter content series, consolidation typically outperformed pagination.

Component URL Indexation

When pagination was necessary, ensuring all component URLs were crawlable and indexable allowed Google to discover and understand full content. Blocking paginated pages from indexing risked losing ranking potential for content only appearing on later pages.

Internal Linking to Deep Pages

Pagination deeper than 3-4 pages often resulted in crawl discovery issues. Internal links from category pages or site navigation to deeper paginated content improved crawl coverage. Ensuring pagination elements were crawlable (not JavaScript-only) also improved discovery.

Load More vs Traditional Pagination

Infinite scroll and "load more" buttons required careful implementation to maintain crawlability. Progressive enhancement ensuring content was accessible without JavaScript interaction preserved SEO while improving UX. Search engines needed accessible URLs for all content regardless of display method.
