Schema Markup Impact Study: Does Structured Data Improve Rankings?

Research examined whether implementing schema markup directly impacts rankings or primarily affects SERP appearance and click-through rates. The study tested various schema types across different site categories.

Rich Results vs Rankings

Schema markup primarily improves SERP appearance through rich results rather than providing direct ranking boosts. Pages with and without schema showed similar ranking patterns when other factors were controlled. However, enhanced SERP presence can improve CTR, potentially creating indirect ranking benefits through engagement signals.

CTR Improvements from Rich Results

Pages displaying rich results showed measurably higher click-through rates than standard listings. Review stars, FAQ dropdowns, and how-to carousels drew user attention and increased clicks. The CTR benefit varied by rich result type and competitive context but was consistently positive.

Schema Types Worth Implementing

Not all schema types generate visible rich results. Organization, Product, Article, FAQ, How-To, and Local Business schemas showed the most frequent rich result generation. Other schema types provide machine-readable data that may help Google understand content but don't produce visible SERP enhancements.

Implementation Quality Matters

Incorrect or spammy schema implementation can result in manual actions or rich result removal. Google's testing tools help validate implementation. The research found that conservative, accurate schema implementation outperformed aggressive attempts to trigger every possible rich result.
