Quick Reference
Element Code: PE-004
Issue: CSS and JavaScript files block page rendering
Impact: Delayed First Contentful Paint, slower perceived load time
Fix: Inline critical CSS, defer non-critical JS, use async loading
Detection: Lighthouse, PageSpeed Insights, WebPageTest
What Is This Issue?
By default, CSS and JavaScript in the head block rendering until they're downloaded and processed. This delays when users first see content, even if the HTML has arrived.
Why This Matters
First Contentful Paint (FCP) is a Core Web Vital. Render-blocking resources directly delay FCP, making your page feel slow even with fast server response times.
How to Fix This Issue
For JavaScript:
For CSS:
- Inline Critical CSS: Put above-the-fold styles in the head
- Preload Key CSS: Use rel="preload" for important stylesheets
- Load Non-Critical CSS Async: Use media queries or JS loading
TL;DR (The Simple Version)
Your CSS and JavaScript files are blocking the page from rendering. Add "defer" to script tags, inline your critical CSS, and load non-essential resources after the page displays.
