- Element Code: LOC-001
- Issue: Business has no Google Business Profile (GBP)
- Impact: Invisible in the Map Pack and Google Maps for local queries
- Fix: Create, verify and fully complete a GBP listing
- Detection: Search your brand + city; check Google Maps
What this issue means
Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the listing that powers the local "Map Pack," Google Maps results, and the knowledge panel for your business. Without one, you simply can't appear in the most prominent local results — no matter how strong your website is.
Why it matters
For local-intent searches ("plumber near me," "dentist in [city]"), the Map Pack sits above the organic results and captures the majority of clicks. A complete, verified GBP is the single highest-leverage local SEO asset you can own, and it's free.
How to fix it
- Create the profile at business.google.com using a real, consistent business name.
- Verify ownership (postcard, phone, email, or video, depending on eligibility).
- Complete every field: categories, hours, service area, phone, website, description, and attributes.
- Add real photos and keep them current.
- Choose the most specific primary category and add relevant secondary categories.
- Keep it active with Posts, Q&A, and review responses.
Common mistakes
- Keyword-stuffing the business name (a guideline violation that risks suspension).
- Leaving the profile unverified or half-completed.
- Using a call-tracking number that doesn't match the website's NAP.
Tools
Google Business Profile Manager; the local search itself; and rank-tracking tools with a Map Pack view.
