Helpful content update

The Helpful Content Update is a Google ranking change first launched in August 2022 that rewards content written to help people and demotes content made mainly to rank in search.

The update introduced a site-wide signal aimed at "people-first" content. Google's concern was the rise of pages built primarily for search engines: thin, derivative, or padded articles that answered a query on paper but left readers unsatisfied. Sites with a large share of such content could see their overall visibility reduced, not just the weak pages, because the signal assessed the site as a whole.

Google published a self-assessment to guide creators, asking whether content is written for a real audience, reflects first-hand expertise, and leaves readers feeling they learned what they came for. Content that exists only to capture traffic, summarizes what others already said without adding value, or chases trends outside a site's expertise was the kind the update targeted.

In March 2024 Google folded the helpful content system into its core ranking systems. From that point there was no longer a separate, standalone helpful content update; the helpfulness assessment became part of the broader core update process. The underlying idea persists across core updates, but practitioners should think of it now as one factor inside the core rather than its own named event.
