Pillar Page

Pillar page

A pillar page is a broad, authoritative page that covers a core topic in full and links out to more detailed pages about its subtopics. It serves as the hub in a hub-and-spoke content structure, the central resource a reader and a search engine can both return to.

The pillar gives a comprehensive overview of a subject without exhausting every detail in one place. Instead, it introduces each major subtopic and links to a dedicated page that explores it in depth. Those deeper pages, the cluster content, link back to the pillar in return. This linking pattern signals to search engines that the pillar is the central reference on the topic and that the cluster pages exist to support and extend it.

The structure helps both readers and search engines. A visitor can start at the pillar for the big picture, then follow a link to whatever specific question they have, and come back to continue. Search engines, meanwhile, see a clearly organized body of related content, which helps a site establish topical authority and spreads ranking signals across the group through the internal links, so strength in one page lifts the others.

A pillar page works best when paired with genuine keyword mapping, so each cluster page owns a distinct intent and none compete with the pillar or with one another. The pillar typically targets a broad head term, while the cluster pages target more specific, often long-tail, queries. Built this way, the pillar is not just a long article but the organizing center of a deliberate content plan, and it tends to age well because new subtopics can be added as fresh cluster pages without disrupting what already exists.
