
What Google Trends Is

How the 0-to-100 Scale Actually Works
Google Trends takes the search interest for your term, over the time range and region you picked, and scales it so the single highest point equals 100. Every other point is a percentage of that peak. A value of 50 means interest at that moment was half of the peak; a value of 0 means interest was negligible, not literally zero.
Two consequences follow. First, the scale is always relative to whatever you're comparing. Change the date range or region and the whole chart re-normalizes, so 100 in one view is a different absolute quantity than 100 in another. Second, you cannot read magnitude off a single line. A niche term and a massive term can both peak at 100 on their own charts while differing by a thousandfold in real searches. To compare true size, you have to plot both terms on the same chart, where Google normalizes them against each other.

A Real Example: Reading It Right vs. Wrong
Plot "iphone" against "flip phone" on the same Google Trends chart. The iPhone line towers; flip phone hugs the bottom. The wrong read is "flip phone gets almost no searches." It gets plenty, in the millions, but it's tiny relative to the iPhone, so on a shared chart normalized to the iPhone's peak it flattens out near the floor.
Now plot "flip phone" by itself over five years. Suddenly it has its own shape, a slow rise as retro handsets came back into fashion, with values swinging between 40 and 100. Same term, two completely different-looking charts, because the scale is always relative to what's on screen. The right read is: on its own, flip-phone interest is climbing; against the iPhone, it's a rounding error. Both are true, and knowing which question you're asking is the whole skill.

- Set the range to five years first. This separates a real seasonal cycle or durable rise from a one-off spike. Then narrow to 90 days or 12 months if you need recent detail.
- Use Compare to gauge relative size. Since a single line never shows magnitude, put your candidate terms on one chart to see which is genuinely bigger and which is climbing faster.
- Mine Rising related queries. The "Rising" panel is where breakout sub-topics surface before they're crowded. A "Breakout" tag means growth over 5,000%, though off a small base, so verify the real numbers.
- Filter by region and category. Narrow to your target country and the right category to strip out noise, especially for ambiguous terms like "jaguar" (car vs. animal).
- Confirm magnitude elsewhere. Take the direction from Trends and the absolute volume from Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, or Semrush before you commit budget to a topic.
