Technical Definition
Average position is the mean ranking position for a page or query in Google Search Console. Calculated across all impressions. Position 1 = top result. Numbers can be fractional (3.5) due to averaging. Useful for tracking ranking trends but can be misleading with mixed SERP features. Lower number = better position.
Simple Explanation (ELI13)
Average position shows where your page typically ranks in search results. Position 1 is the top spot. If you see 3.5, it means your page averages around the third or fourth position. Tracking this over time shows if your SEO efforts are helping your rankings improve.
