A zero-click search is a search that is resolved on the results page itself, without the user clicking through to any website. The answer appears directly in the SERP through features like featured snippets, knowledge panels, instant answers, or AI Overviews, so the searcher's need is met without a visit to a source site.
These results have grown as search engines surface more answers in place. Simple factual queries (a definition, a conversion, a sports score, business hours) are commonly answered on the page. Generative summaries extend this further by composing an answer from multiple sources at the top of results.
For publishers, zero-click cuts both ways. Appearing in a snippet or AI summary builds visibility and brand recognition even without a click, and being the cited source can still earn referral traffic. But for content whose value depended on the visit, fewer clicks can mean less traffic from queries the engine now answers itself.
Responses include focusing on queries that genuinely require a deeper visit, structuring content to win snippets and citations, and strengthening brand presence so recognition compounds across surfaces. Understanding which queries are likely to resolve on the SERP helps set realistic traffic expectations.
It also helps to read zero-click in context rather than as pure loss. Many such searches were never going to convert into a meaningful visit, and appearing as the answer can still build authority and recognition that pays off on higher-intent queries later. The practical aim is to identify which of your target queries genuinely reward a click, win the snippet or citation where the answer is shown on the page, and measure visibility (impressions, citations, brand mentions) alongside raw clicks.
