Technical Definition
A backlink is an incoming link from an external website to your site. Major ranking factor since Google's founding. Quality matters more than quantity: links from relevant, authoritative sites are more valuable. Part of Google's PageRank algorithm. Acquired through quality content, outreach, digital PR, and relationship building.
Simple Explanation (ELI13)
A backlink is when another website links to yours. It's like a vote of confidence. The more quality websites that link to you, the more Google thinks your site is trustworthy and important. Not all backlinks are equal, though. A link from a respected news site is worth more than a random blog.
