Link Insertion

Link insertion is the practice of adding a backlink into a piece of content that already exists on another website, rather than placing it within new content. Also called a niche edit or a curated link, it involves a publisher editing a live, often already-indexed page to include a link pointing to your site.

The appeal is that the host page may already have age, traffic, and existing backlinks, so a contextual link added inside relevant, established content can be attractive. When the link genuinely fits the surrounding topic and improves the page for readers, a link insertion can resemble an editorial reference. Outreach for these placements typically asks a site owner to update an existing article where your resource is a natural addition.

The risk is that link insertions are frequently sold purely for SEO value. When a link is paid for and intended to pass ranking signals, it falls under Google's definition of a link scheme, regardless of whether it sits in old or new content. Paid niche edits, inserted with optimized anchor text and no genuine editorial reason, are exactly the kind of manipulative linking that can attract penalties.

The deciding factor is intent and relevance, not the mechanism. A link added to existing content because it truly helps readers, given freely, behaves like an editorial link. A link bought and slipped into an unrelated article to manipulate rankings does not. Anyone considering link insertions should weigh relevance, whether money changed hands, and whether the placement would make sense to a reader, since paid links that pass equity should be marked as sponsored.
