Technical Definition
Proximity is the distance between the searcher and business location. A primary ranking factor for local search. Google uses device location for 'near me' searches or interprets location from query text. Businesses can't control proximity but can optimize other factors. Service area businesses don't have physical proximity to work with.
Simple Explanation (ELI13)
Proximity is how close your business is to the person searching. If someone searches 'coffee shop near me,' the closest shops have an advantage. You can't change where you're located, but you can make sure Google correctly knows your location and optimize everything else about your listing.
