We Analyzed 4 Million Google Search Results: CTR Statistics

Backlinko conducted an extensive study of click-through rates across 4 million Google search results to establish benchmark CTR data by ranking position. The research provides essential data for SEO practitioners estimating traffic potential and understanding the value differences between ranking positions.

Position 1 Dominates Clicks

The first organic position captures approximately 27.6% of all clicks on average, confirming its outsized importance in search visibility. This represents a significant drop from historical CTR rates, likely reflecting the increased presence of SERP features, ads, and zero-click searches. Still, the data demonstrates that ranking first provides roughly 10x more clicks than ranking tenth.

Steep Decline After Position 3

Click-through rates decline sharply after the third position. Position 2 averages approximately 15.8% CTR, while position 3 captures about 11%. By position 10, average CTR drops to just 2.4%. The steep decline emphasizes why the difference between ranking fifth versus first is substantial from a traffic perspective, despite both being "page one" rankings.

Impact of SERP Features

The study found that SERP features significantly impact organic CTR. Queries with featured snippets, knowledge panels, or other SERP features showed lower organic CTRs overall, as some clicks are captured by these elements. However, winning the featured snippet position can dramatically increase traffic compared to holding a traditional organic position.

Industry and Query Type Variations

CTR varies significantly by query type and industry. Branded queries show higher CTRs for the brand's listing. Informational queries tend to have lower organic CTRs due to zero-click answers. Commercial queries showed some of the highest CTRs, as users actively seek to visit sites. Understanding these variations helps set realistic traffic expectations for different keyword portfolios.
