Skyscraper Technique is a content-and-outreach link-building method coined by Brian Dean of Backlinko. The premise is captured in its name: find content that has already earned many links, build something clearly better, then reach out to the sites linking to the original and ask them to point to your improved version instead.
The process runs in three steps. First, identify proven content in your niche by finding pages that have attracted strong backlink counts, which shows the topic can earn links. Second, create a markedly better resource: more current, more thorough, better designed, or backed by stronger data. Third, use a backlink tool to list the sites linking to the original pieces and contact them with a concise pitch explaining why your version is worth a link.
The technique works because it removes two big uncertainties. You already know the topic attracts links, and you already have a list of people who link to that kind of content, so outreach goes to a qualified audience rather than cold prospects. When your piece is genuinely superior and relevant to their page, swapping or adding a link is an easy decision for the publisher.
Its weakness is that "make it longer" is not the same as "make it better." If the existing content is already strong, padding word count changes nothing, and mass outreach with a weak improvement converts poorly. The method rewards real added value, original research, clearer explanations, or a more useful format, and targeted outreach to publishers who have a concrete reason to update their link.
