Crawled – Currently Not Indexed: Why It Happens and How to Fix It

- Indexing & Crawl
"Crawled – currently not indexed" is one of the most frustrating statuses in Google Search Console, because it means Google saw your page, understood it, and decided it was not worth adding to the index. It is not a technical block. It is a quality and priority judgment — which is exactly why it is fixable.
What the status really means
Googlebot fetched the URL successfully. There is no robots block, no noindex, no canonical pointing elsewhere. Google simply chose, for now, not to index it. The phrase "currently" matters: it can change in either direction.
The real causes
- Thin or duplicative value. The page does not add enough over what already ranks. This is the most common cause by far.
- Low site-level trust. On a new or low-authority domain, Google indexes conservatively — good pages get held back simply because the site has not earned indexing budget.
- Scaled or templated content. Large volumes of similar pages trigger selective indexing; Google samples a few and parks the rest.
- Near-duplicate clusters. Many pages competing for the same intent, so Google keeps one and skips the others.
The recovery playbook
- Be honest about value. Does the page answer the intent better than page one already does? If not, improve it until it does — depth, originality, data, examples.
- Consolidate duplicates. Merge near-identical pages into one strong URL and 301 the rest.
- Prune ruthlessly. Remove or
noindexpages that will never deserve indexing. Fewer strong pages raise the whole site's indexing priority. (See index bloat.) - Strengthen internal links to the page from indexed, relevant content — it signals importance.
- Build site-level authority. Real links and brand signals raise the indexing budget for everything.
- Request indexing via the URL Inspection tool after you have genuinely improved the page — not before.
One caution: do not spam "Request indexing." It does not override a quality judgment. Fix the cause, then ask.
