Thin Content Alert

Thin content alert
Quick Reference

  • Element Code: ON-037
  • Issue: Page offers little unique value relative to search intent
  • Impact: Low quality signal; pages (or the whole site) can be suppressed
  • Fix: Expand with genuine value, consolidate duplicates, or noindex/remove
  • Detection: Word count + manual value review, GSC "Crawled - currently not indexed"

What this issue means

Thin content isn't simply "short" — a 200-word answer that fully satisfies a query is fine. Thin content is content that fails to satisfy the intent better than what already ranks: boilerplate, auto-generated filler, near-duplicate pages, doorway pages, and thin affiliate or templated content.

Why it matters

Google's Helpful Content signals and core ranking systems assess quality at both the page and the site level. A large volume of thin pages can drag down an entire domain — the classic symptom is pages stuck in "Crawled — currently not indexed" and a site that ranks for almost nothing despite a big page count.

How to fix it

  1. Expand with genuine value: original analysis, data, examples, and direct answers — not padding.
  2. Consolidate: merge several thin pages on the same topic into one strong, comprehensive resource and 301-redirect the rest.
  3. Prune: if a page can't be made genuinely useful, noindex it or remove it. Fewer strong pages beat thousands of weak ones.
  4. Match intent: ensure the format (guide, comparison, tool, FAQ) fits what searchers actually want.

Common mistakes

  • "Fixing" thin content by padding with fluff — still thin, now longer.
  • Mass-producing pages for every keyword variation.
  • Keeping thousands of low-value pages indexed and hoping volume wins. It doesn't.

Tools to detect it

Use word count as a first filter, then a manual value review. In Google Search Console, the Pages report's "Crawled — currently not indexed" and "Discovered — currently not indexed" buckets are strong thin-content tells.

FAQ

Is there a minimum word count?

No. Value and intent satisfaction matter, not a number. Some great pages are short.

Should I delete thin pages or noindex them?

If they have value to users but not search, noindex. If they have neither, remove and redirect.

TL;DR: Thin content is low value, not low word count. Expand it with real substance, consolidate duplicates, or remove it — quality over quantity.
