Q&a (google business)

What Google Business Q&A is

Google Business Q&A is the questions-and-answers section on your Google Business Profile — and the catch that trips up most owners is that anyone can ask a question and anyone can answer it, not just you. Leave it unmonitored and a random stranger's wrong answer becomes the first thing a ready-to-buy searcher reads about your business.

The stakes: this section sits high in the profile panel, right where someone is deciding whether to call you. A confident, correct answer closes the loop; an unanswered question — or worse, a wrong one — sends them to the competitor whose profile looks handled.

A real example

You run a dental practice. Someone posts on your profile: "Do you take Delta Dental?" You never see it. Three weeks later a former patient answers "I don't think so" — they're wrong, you do — and that answer, upvoted once, now shows as the top Q&A on your listing. Every prospective patient who checks insurance before booking reads a false "no" and moves on.

The fix is boring and effective: you answer it yourself, same day, in the business voice — "Yes, we're in-network with Delta Dental PPO. Call us at [number] and we'll verify your specific plan." You can even seed the question yourself from a customer account so the right answer is there before anyone else weighs in. That's not gaming it; that's an FAQ living where people actually look.

How to seed and monitor your Q&A

  1. List your real FAQs. Pull the five to ten questions your front desk actually fields — parking, insurance, hours, appointments, pricing, "do you do X."
  2. Seed them. From a personal Google account (not the business profile — the business account can't post questions), ask each question on your own listing. This is allowed and encouraged; it's Google's own suggested use.
  3. Answer from the business profile. Signed in as the owner, answer each seeded question fully. The owner badge makes it authoritative.
  4. Upvote the correct answers so they float to the top of the section. Upvotes order the display.
  5. Turn on notifications and check weekly. New questions and new public answers don't always alert reliably — build a recurring check into your routine so a wrong answer never sits for weeks.
  6. Report abuse, don't argue. If someone posts spam or an offensive "answer," flag it for removal rather than replying in kind.

Common mistakes (and the fix)

  • Never checking the section. The single biggest error — you don't monitor, so the public writes your answers. Fix: weekly review, notifications on, calendar reminder as backup.
  • Trying to ask questions from the business account. The business profile can answer but can't post questions. Fix: seed from a personal Google account.
  • Answering like a lawyer. Terse, hedged, no next step. Fix: answer in plain language and end with a call-to-action — "Call us and we'll sort it."
  • Ignoring a wrong public answer instead of correcting it. Deleting isn't always possible, but you can post the correct answer and upvote it above the wrong one. Fix: out-rank the bad answer rather than hoping it disappears.
  • Treating Q&A as a ranking lever. It's an engagement and trust surface, not a direct ranking factor. Fix: measure it on conversion and objection-handling, and let your on-site content do the ranking work.

Where Q&A fits with the rest of the profile

Q&A is the objection-handler in your local stack. It pairs naturally with Google Posts (which drive the click and the promo) and with the FAQ content on your own site, which you can reinforce with LocalBusiness schema so the same answers show consistently across your profile and your pages. The Local SEO FAQ covers how these profile surfaces work together, and getting more reviews handles the trust half of the equation.

FAQ

Can I ask questions on my own listing?

Yes — from a personal Google account, not the business account. Google explicitly suggests seeding your own FAQs this way. Then answer them as the owner so the badged, correct answer is in place before the public gets there.

Can I delete a wrong answer someone else posted?

You can't always delete another user's answer directly, but you can post the correct answer, upvote it to the top, and report the wrong one if it violates policy. Out-ranking is usually faster than removal.

Does Q&A affect my local rankings?

Not as a direct ranking factor. It affects conversions and trust — whether a searcher who found you actually contacts you. That's the value: it protects the click you already earned.

How is this different from reviews?

Reviews are opinions about past experiences; Q&A answers specific pre-purchase questions. Reviews build trust at scale; Q&A removes the single objection standing between a searcher and a call. You want both handled.

Why do questions sit unanswered for so long?

Because Q&A notifications are unreliable and most owners don't check the section. That's exactly why the public ends up answering — and exactly why a weekly manual check is worth building into your routine.
